Exodus 40
The Tabernacle Completed
Then the Lord said to Moses, 2 âSet up the Tabernacle on the first day of the new year. 3 Place the Ark of the Covenant inside, and install the inner curtain to enclose the Ark within the Most Holy Place. 4 Then bring in the table, and arrange the utensils on it. And bring in the lampstand, and set up the lamps.
5 âPlace the gold incense altar in front of the Ark of the Covenant. Then hang the curtain at the entrance of the Tabernacle. 6 Place the altar of burnt offering in front of the Tabernacle entrance. 7 Set the washbasin between the Tabernacle and the altar, and fill it with water. 8 Then set up the courtyard around the outside of the tent, and hang the curtain for the courtyard entrance.
9 âTake the anointing oil and anoint the Tabernacle and all its furnishings to consecrate them and make them holy. 10 Anoint the altar of burnt offering and its utensils to consecrate them. Then the altar will become absolutely holy. 11 Next anoint the washbasin and its stand to consecrate them.
12 âPresent Aaron and his sons at the entrance of the Tabernacle, and wash them with water. 13 Dress Aaron with the sacred garments and anoint him, consecrating him to serve me as a priest. 14 Then present his sons and dress them in their tunics. 15 Anoint them as you did their father, so they may also serve me as priests. With their anointing, Aaronâs descendants are set apart for the priesthood forever, from generation to generation.â
16 Moses proceeded to do everything just as the Lord had commanded him. 17 So the Tabernacle was set up on the first day of the first month of the second year. 18 Moses erected the Tabernacle by setting down its bases, inserting the frames, attaching the crossbars, and setting up the posts. 19 Then he spread the coverings over the Tabernacle framework and put on the protective layers, just as the Lord had commanded him.
20 He took the stone tablets inscribed with the terms of the covenant and placed them inside the Ark. Then he attached the carrying poles to the Ark, and he set the Arkâs coverâthe place of atonementâon top of it. 21 Then he brought the Ark of the Covenant into the Tabernacle and hung the inner curtain to shield it from view, just as the Lord had commanded him.
22 Next Moses placed the table in the Tabernacle, along the north side of the Holy Place, just outside the inner curtain. 23 And he arranged the Bread of the Presence on the table before the Lord, just as the Lord had commanded him.
24 He set the lampstand in the Tabernacle across from the table on the south side of the Holy Place. 25 Then he lit the lamps in the Lordâs presence, just as the Lord had commanded him. 26 He also placed the gold incense altar in the Tabernacle, in the Holy Place in front of the inner curtain. 27 On it he burned the fragrant incense, just as the Lord had commanded him.
28 He hung the curtain at the entrance of the Tabernacle, 29 and he placed the altar of burnt offering near the Tabernacle entrance. On it he offered a burnt offering and a grain offering, just as the Lord had commanded him.
30 Next Moses placed the washbasin between the Tabernacle and the altar. He filled it with water so the priests could wash themselves. 31 Moses and Aaron and Aaronâs sons used water from it to wash their hands and feet. 32 Whenever they approached the altar and entered the Tabernacle, they washed themselves, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
33 Then he hung the curtains forming the courtyard around the Tabernacle and the altar. And he set up the curtain at the entrance of the courtyard. So at last Moses finished the work.
The Lordâs Glory Fills the Tabernacle
34 Then the cloud covered the Tabernacle, and the glory of the Lord filled the Tabernacle. 35 Moses could no longer enter the Tabernacle because the cloud had settled down over it, and the glory of the Lord filled the Tabernacle.
36 Now whenever the cloud lifted from the Tabernacle, the people of Israel would set out on their journey, following it. 37 But if the cloud did not rise, they remained where they were until it lifted. 38 The cloud of the Lord hovered over the Tabernacle during the day, and at night fire glowed inside the cloud so the whole family of Israel could see it. This continued throughout all their journeys.
Leviticus 1
Procedures for the Burnt Offering
The Lord called to Moses from the Tabernacle and said to him, 2 âGive the following instructions to the people of Israel. When you present an animal as an offering to the Lord, you may take it from your herd of cattle or your flock of sheep and goats.
3 âIf the animal you present as a burnt offering is from the herd, it must be a male with no defects. Bring it to the entrance of the Tabernacle so you may be accepted by the Lord. 4 Lay your hand on the animalâs head, and the Lord will accept its death in your place to purify you, making you right with him. 5 Then slaughter the young bull in the Lordâs presence, and Aaronâs sons, the priests, will present the animalâs blood by splattering it against all sides of the altar that stands at the entrance to the Tabernacle. 6 Then skin the animal and cut it into pieces. 7 The sons of Aaron the priest will build a wood fire on the altar. 8 They will arrange the pieces of the offering, including the head and fat, on the wood burning on the altar. 9 But the internal organs and the legs must first be washed with water. Then the priest will burn the entire sacrifice on the altar as a burnt offering. It is a special gift, a pleasing aroma to the Lord.
10 âIf the animal you present as a burnt offering is from the flock, it may be either a sheep or a goat, but it must be a male with no defects. 11 Slaughter the animal on the north side of the altar in the Lordâs presence, and Aaronâs sons, the priests, will splatter its blood against all sides of the altar. 12 Then cut the animal in pieces, and the priests will arrange the pieces of the offering, including the head and fat, on the wood burning on the altar. 13 But the internal organs and the legs must first be washed with water. Then the priest will burn the entire sacrifice on the altar as a burnt offering. It is a special gift, a pleasing aroma to the Lord.
14 âIf you present a bird as a burnt offering to the Lord, choose either a turtledove or a young pigeon. 15 The priest will take the bird to the altar, wring off its head, and burn it on the altar. But first he must drain its blood against the side of the altar. 16 The priest must also remove the crop and the feathers and throw them in the ashes on the east side of the altar. 17 Then, grasping the bird by its wings, the priest will tear the bird open, but without tearing it apart. Then he will burn it as a burnt offering on the wood burning on the altar. It is a special gift, a pleasing aroma to the Lord.
Leviticus 2
Procedures for the Grain Offering
âWhen you present grain as an offering to the Lord, the offering must consist of choice flour. You are to pour olive oil on it, sprinkle it with frankincense, 2 and bring it to Aaronâs sons, the priests. The priest will scoop out a handful of the flour moistened with oil, together with all the frankincense, and burn this representative portion on the altar. It is a special gift, a pleasing aroma to the Lord. 3 The rest of the grain offering will then be given to Aaron and his sons. This offering will be considered a most holy part of the special gifts presented to the Lord.
4 âIf your offering is a grain offering baked in an oven, it must be made of choice flour, but without any yeast. It may be presented in the form of thin cakes mixed with olive oil or wafers spread with olive oil. 5 If your grain offering is cooked on a griddle, it must be made of choice flour mixed with olive oil but without any yeast. 6 Break it in pieces and pour olive oil on it; it is a grain offering. 7 If your grain offering is prepared in a pan, it must be made of choice flour and olive oil.
8 âNo matter how a grain offering for the Lord has been prepared, bring it to the priest, who will present it at the altar. 9 The priest will take a representative portion of the grain offering and burn it on the altar. It is a special gift, a pleasing aroma to the Lord. 10 The rest of the grain offering will then be given to Aaron and his sons as their food. This offering will be considered a most holy part of the special gifts presented to the Lord.
11 âDo not use yeast in preparing any of the grain offerings you present to the Lord, because no yeast or honey may be burned as a special gift presented to the Lord. 12 You may add yeast and honey to an offering of the first crops of your harvest, but these must never be offered on the altar as a pleasing aroma to the Lord. 13 Season all your grain offerings with salt to remind you of Godâs eternal covenant. Never forget to add salt to your grain offerings.
14 âIf you present a grain offering to the Lord from the first portion of your harvest, bring fresh grain that is coarsely ground and roasted on a fire. 15 Put olive oil on this grain offering, and sprinkle it with frankincense. 16 The priest will take a representative portion of the grain moistened with oil, together with all the frankincense, and burn it as a special gift presented to the Lord.
Matthew 26
The Plot to Kill Jesus
When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he said to his disciples, 2 âAs you know, Passover begins in two days, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.â
3 At that same time the leading priests and elders were meeting at the residence of Caiaphas, the high priest, 4 plotting how to capture Jesus secretly and kill him. 5 âBut not during the Passover celebration,â they agreed, âor the people may riot.â
Jesus Anointed at Bethany
6 Meanwhile, Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon, a man who had previously had leprosy. 7 While he was eating, a woman came in with a beautiful alabaster jar of expensive perfume and poured it over his head.
8 The disciples were indignant when they saw this. âWhat a waste!â they said. 9 âIt could have been sold for a high price and the money given to the poor.â
10 But Jesus, aware of this, replied, âWhy criticize this woman for doing such a good thing to me? 11 You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me. 12 She has poured this perfume on me to prepare my body for burial. 13 I tell you the truth, wherever the Good News is preached throughout the world, this womanâs deed will be remembered and discussed.â
Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus
14 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, went to the leading priests 15 and asked, âHow much will you pay me to betray Jesus to you?â And they gave him thirty pieces of silver. 16 From that time on, Judas began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus.
The Last Supper
17 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, âWhere do you want us to prepare the Passover meal for you?â
18 âAs you go into the city,â he told them, âyou will see a certain man. Tell him, âThe Teacher says: My time has come, and I will eat the Passover meal with my disciples at your house.ââ 19 So the disciples did as Jesus told them and prepared the Passover meal there.
20 When it was evening, Jesus sat down at the table with the Twelve. 21 While they were eating, he said, âI tell you the truth, one of you will betray me.â
22 Greatly distressed, each one asked in turn, âAm I the one, Lord?â
23 He replied, âOne of you who has just eaten from this bowl with me will betray me. 24 For the Son of Man must die, as the Scriptures declared long ago. But how terrible it will be for the one who betrays him. It would be far better for that man if he had never been born!â
25 Judas, the one who would betray him, also asked, âRabbi, am I the one?â
And Jesus told him, âYou have said it.â
26 As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, âTake this and eat it, for this is my body.â
27 And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, âEach of you drink from it, 28 for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many. 29 Mark my wordsâI will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new with you in my Fatherâs Kingdom.â
30 Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.
Jesus Predicts Peterâs Denial
31 On the way, Jesus told them, âTonight all of you will desert me. For the Scriptures say,
âGod will strike the Shepherd,
and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.â
32 But after I have been raised from the dead, I will go ahead of you to Galilee and meet you there.â
33 Peter declared, âEven if everyone else deserts you, I will never desert you.â
34 Jesus replied, âI tell you the truth, Peterâthis very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me.â
35 âNo!â Peter insisted. âEven if I have to die with you, I will never deny you!â And all the other disciples vowed the same.
Jesus Prays in Gethsemane
36 Then Jesus went with them to the olive grove called Gethsemane, and he said, âSit here while I go over there to pray.â 37 He took Peter and Zebedeeâs two sons, James and John, and he became anguished and distressed. 38 He told them, âMy soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.â
39 He went on a little farther and bowed with his face to the ground, praying, âMy Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.â
40 Then he returned to the disciples and found them asleep. He said to Peter, âCouldnât you watch with me even one hour? 41 Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!â
42 Then Jesus left them a second time and prayed, âMy Father! If this cup cannot be taken away unless I drink it, your will be done.â 43 When he returned to them again, he found them sleeping, for they couldnât keep their eyes open.
44 So he went to pray a third time, saying the same things again. 45 Then he came to the disciples and said, âGo ahead and sleep. Have your rest. But lookâthe time has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Up, letâs be going. Look, my betrayer is here!â
Jesus Is Betrayed and Arrested
47 And even as Jesus said this, Judas, one of the twelve disciples, arrived with a crowd of men armed with swords and clubs. They had been sent by the leading priests and elders of the people. 48 The traitor, Judas, had given them a prearranged signal: âYou will know which one to arrest when I greet him with a kiss.â 49 So Judas came straight to Jesus. âGreetings, Rabbi!â he exclaimed and gave him the kiss.
50 Jesus said, âMy friend, go ahead and do what you have come for.â
Then the others grabbed Jesus and arrested him. 51 But one of the men with Jesus pulled out his sword and struck the high priestâs slave, slashing off his ear.
52 âPut away your sword,â Jesus told him. âThose who use the sword will die by the sword. 53 Donât you realize that I could ask my Father for thousands of angels to protect us, and he would send them instantly? 54 But if I did, how would the Scriptures be fulfilled that describe what must happen now?â
55 Then Jesus said to the crowd, âAm I some dangerous revolutionary, that you come with swords and clubs to arrest me? Why didnât you arrest me in the Temple? I was there teaching every day. 56 But this is all happening to fulfill the words of the prophets as recorded in the Scriptures.â At that point, all the disciples deserted him and fled.
Jesus before the Council
57 Then the people who had arrested Jesus led him to the home of Caiaphas, the high priest, where the teachers of religious law and the elders had gathered. 58 Meanwhile, Peter followed him at a distance and came to the high priestâs courtyard. He went in and sat with the guards and waited to see how it would all end.
59 Inside, the leading priests and the entire high council were trying to find witnesses who would lie about Jesus, so they could put him to death. 60 But even though they found many who agreed to give false witness, they could not use anyoneâs testimony. Finally, two men came forward 61 who declared, âThis man said, âI am able to destroy the Temple of God and rebuild it in three days.ââ
62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, âWell, arenât you going to answer these charges? What do you have to say for yourself?â 63 But Jesus remained silent. Then the high priest said to him, âI demand in the name of the living Godâtell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.â
64 Jesus replied, âYou have said it. And in the future you will see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at Godâs right hand and coming on the clouds of heaven.â
65 Then the high priest tore his clothing to show his horror and said, âBlasphemy! Why do we need other witnesses? You have all heard his blasphemy. 66 What is your verdict?â
âGuilty!â they shouted. âHe deserves to die!â
67 Then they began to spit in Jesusâ face and beat him with their fists. And some slapped him, 68 jeering, âProphesy to us, you Messiah! Who hit you that time?â
Peter Denies Jesus
69 Meanwhile, Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant girl came over and said to him, âYou were one of those with Jesus the Galilean.â
70 But Peter denied it in front of everyone. âI donât know what youâre talking about,â he said.
71 Later, out by the gate, another servant girl noticed him and said to those standing around, âThis man was with Jesus of Nazareth.â
72 Again Peter denied it, this time with an oath. âI donât even know the man,â he said.
73 A little later some of the other bystanders came over to Peter and said, âYou must be one of them; we can tell by your Galilean accent.â
74 Peter swore, âA curse on me if Iâm lyingâI donât know the man!â And immediately the rooster crowed.
75 Suddenly, Jesusâ words flashed through Peterâs mind: âBefore the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me.â And he went away, weeping bitterly.
